6 Questions to Ask Before Trusting AI With Your Plan Review

AI plan review tools all make similar claims — faster review, fewer errors reaching the field, consistent quality. The differences that actually matter show up when you ask harder questions about how the tool works and what happens when it's wrong. Here are six worth asking before you adopt any of them.

1. Does it read the drawing, or just the text?

A lot of what matters on a civil plan set isn't text at all — contour lines, hatching, symbol placement, spot elevations relative to a contour. A tool that primarily extracts and analyzes text metadata will miss issues that only show up in the actual linework. Ask specifically whether the tool is reading drawing geometry or working from extractable text and labels — the answer changes what kinds of errors it can realistically catch.

2. Who's still responsible if it misses something?

This is the question that matters most and gets addressed least directly. AI review tools are review aids — they don't change who's professionally and legally responsible for the plans. 3. Can you actually verify a finding, or do you have to take its word for it?

"We found 12 issues" isn't useful on its own. A finding you can act on needs a sheet reference, a specific location, ideally a code citation if it's a compliance issue, and some indication of how confident the tool is. If a tool can't tell you exactly where an issue is and why it flagged it, your reviewer ends up doing the finding-the-issue work manually anyway — which defeats the point.

4. How does it handle false positives?

Every automated review tool will flag things that aren't actually problems — the question is whether the vendor has done anything about it. Ask whether there's any kind of internal check or second pass before findings reach you, versus a single pass straight to your inbox. A tool that dumps raw, unfiltered output on a reviewer just moves the noise from "checking the plans" to "checking the AI's work."

5. What happens to your plan data?

Civil engineering firms are handling client-confidential, often regulated project information. Ask directly whether your plans are used to train the vendor's models, whether they're retained after review, and who else can access them. A vendor that can't answer this clearly and specifically hasn't thought about it enough — this shouldn't be a footnote in a privacy policy nobody reads.

6. Is it built for your discipline, or adapted from a broader tool?

Some plan review tools are civil-specific from the ground up. Others are general construction or multi-discipline plan-check tools that also happen to cover civil.
